Cargo Ship Has Sunk After Sailing While Under A Detention Order in Liberia

17 persons are feared dead and 11 others rescued after a cargo ship under a “detention order” has sunk on the waters in Maryland County.

The Liberian-registered Niko Ivanka left the Liberian capital Monrovia on Saturday (17/07) for a port in the West African country’s south, despite being under a detention order for failing to meet basic safety requirements.

Sri Lanka faces ‘worst beach pollution’ in history from burning cargo ship

A fire onboard a cargo vessel off Sri Lanka’s coast continues to rage for the 11th day straight, causing what could be the worst marine pollution in history for the region.

The 3 month old cargo ship MV X-Press Pearl had a fire erupt while off the coast of Sri Lanka, believed to be caused by chemicals that were being transported. The ship carrying 1486 containers including 25 tonnes of nitric acid (and other chemicals) had 5 tug boats and a navy ship anchored nearby engaged in firefighting efforts.
